Some words don’t translate. That’s not a flaw in the language. It’s proof people see the world differently.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Languages are not just different labels stuck on the same set of ideas. Each one grew out of a particular place and what mattered there, so some things got a single word and other things never needed one. When a word refuses to cross over, you are looking at a thought a whole group of people decided was worth naming.

Ask somebody who speaks another language at home for a word they cannot translate for you. Get them to describe the feeling instead. You will usually learn more about them in that answer than in a month of small talk.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What has another language shown you about how others see things?
