Talking back and speaking up aren’t the same. One is about winning. The other is about being heard.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The difference is what you want when you open your mouth. One version is after a point, the last word, a flicker of satisfaction at having landed something. The other wants to be understood, which means it can survive being disagreed with and does not need the other person to lose. From outside they can look similar, which is why the people you argue with sometimes miss the difference.

Ask yourself, before replying, whether you would be satisfied if they simply understood and still said no. If not, you are after the win. Speaking up sounds like what you need, and talking back sounds like what they got wrong.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When were you trying to win rather than trying to be heard?
