Accountability and degradation are separable, though they often arrive together. A consequence can be firm, clear, and proportionate while still leaving the person their standing as a human being. What the extra humiliation adds is not justice but audience satisfaction, and it tends to make repair less likely rather than more.
When you have to impose a consequence, decide what the consequence is and stop there. Delivering it privately, plainly, and without commentary is usually both kinder and more effective.
