The difference between a risk and a gamble is homework.

The uncertainty is the same in both cases. What differs is whether anybody did the work of finding out roughly how it is likely to go. Homework does not remove the unknown; it converts an unknown into an estimate, and an estimate is something you can weigh against what you have. Without it you are not being bold, you are just being uninformed at speed.

Before the next decision that costs you something, spend twenty minutes checking one thing you have been assuming. Ask somebody who has done it, or read the actual terms.
