You won’t find your style by thinking about it. You’ll find it by making a hundred things and noticing patterns.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Style is a description of behaviour, so it cannot be decided before the behaviour exists. Sitting down to design one produces a set of rules you will abandon as soon as you make something real. What actually happens is that you work for a long time, look back, and find the same preferences turning up repeatedly with no instruction from you. The pattern is discovered rather than chosen.

Stop trying to answer the question and go and make twenty things. Keep them all in one place so you can look across them later. Once a season, lay them out and write down what keeps recurring.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What patterns show up across everything you have made so far?
