Steal techniques, not voices. The how belongs to everyone. The why should be yours.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Technique is public property. How to light a face, hold a chord, build a punchline, miter a corner: none of it belongs to the person who taught it to you. What does not transfer is the reason a particular person makes a particular thing. Take someone’s method and you get better; take their reasons and you end up making a slightly worse copy of their work.

Pick one technical thing you admire this week and learn it properly, down to how it is actually done. Then point it at something only you care about. If you cannot say why your version exists, that is the part still missing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which technique could you borrow without borrowing the reason behind it?
