An audience changes your choices before you are aware of it. You start reaching for what reads quickly, what will be understood, what will not be mocked, and all of that quietly narrows the work. Something made for nobody has no such pressure, and the difference in how it feels to make is usually dramatic. That difference tells you how much of your taste has been outsourced.

Make one thing this month and decide in advance that nobody sees it. Not a secret, just not for anyone. Afterwards, write a sentence about what you did differently, because that sentence lists what you have been avoiding in public.
