If you can describe your project as “like that viral thing, but mine,” it’s not yours yet.

Describing your work by reference to something else means the reference is doing the design. A project defined as a version of an existing hit inherits its shape, its pacing and its reason for existing, which leaves you decorating. That is a fine way to learn and a bad way to make something anyone needs. The test is whether you can say what it is without naming anything else.

Write a one-sentence description of your project with no comparisons allowed. If you cannot, the gap in that sentence is the actual work left to do. Keep rewriting until the sentence stands on its own, then build from that version.
