Rock and hip-hop were both called noise by adults once. New sounds usually get dismissed before they get copied.

Unfamiliarity gets heard as badness, reliably and across generations. The thing that sounds like a mistake to one group is usually a new set of rules that the group has not learned yet, and the same people often end up adopting it a decade later. Dismissal is not a verdict on quality, it is a report on what somebody is used to.

Listen to something your family finds unlistenable and try to work out what it is organised around. What counts as the hook, where the interest lives. You do not have to end up liking it, but you will have practised telling new from bad.
