Making a short film teaches you to respect every job in the credits.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Doing all the jobs yourself is the quickest education in how many jobs there are. You discover that sound is harder than picture, that continuity is a real discipline, and that somebody has to remember where the keys are. Names in the credits stop being a list and start being people who solved problems you now recognise. Respect built that way is specific rather than polite.

Make something short with two friends and swap roles halfway, so each of you does a job you did not choose. Afterwards, name the hardest part of the job you borrowed. Thank the person who normally has it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose job did you underrate until you tried it?
