Learning one instrument badly will teach you more about music than listening to a thousand songs.

Hearing is passive and playing is not. The moment you try to make a chord change with your own fingers, you learn how the pieces of music connect, what is hard, and why certain moves feel satisfying. Thousands of songs can pass through you without any of that landing. Badly is enough, because the understanding comes from the attempt rather than the result.
Pick up whatever instrument is nearest, borrowed or cheap, and learn two chords and the change between them. Play along badly with a song you already know. Give it fifteen minutes a day for two weeks and judge it then.
Would learning an instrument badly teach you more than listening?
