Clap loud for the person who went before you. Every stage gets less scary when the room is kind.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rooms have a temperature, and the people in them set it. When the audience is warm, everyone performs closer to their actual ability, including you, because the fear of a cold room is most of stage fright. Clapping hard for the act before yours is partly generosity and partly building the conditions you want to walk into. Kindness in a room is contagious.

At the next recital, tryout or open mic, be the loudest supporter of whoever goes first. Learn one name and say something specific to them afterwards. Notice how different your own turn feels when the room has already been made friendly.
