On a lot of farms, the animals eat before the people do. That’s what responsibility looks like at 6 a.m.

Responsibility is an order of operations before it is a feeling. Animals cannot wait and cannot ask, so whoever is awake feeds them first, whatever they would rather be doing. That is what the word means in practice, because something depends on you and so it goes ahead of your comfort. Nobody has to feel inspired for it to happen.

Find the thing in your week that genuinely cannot wait and put it first in the day. Do it before your phone. Treat the order as settled, so you are not negotiating with yourself at six in the morning.
