Your first week at any job will feel like everyone knows more than you. They do. That’s why it’s your first week.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Everyone else has months of accumulated small knowledge: where things live, what the regulars want, which machine sticks. None of that is intelligence, it is time, so feeling behind is an accurate reading of the situation rather than evidence about you. The discomfort is temporary and specific. Treating it as a verdict is what makes a first week worse than it needs to be.

Spend the week collecting small facts instead of trying to look competent. Write things down and ask the same question twice if you need to. By Friday, count what you now know that you did not on Monday.
