Ballet turnout comes from the hips. Force it from the knees and you get hurt. Some progress can’t be cheated.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some gains come from the right place or not at all. Turnout lives in the hips, and forcing it from the knees looks similar for a while and then costs you a season. Plenty of progress works like that: a shortcut that mimics the real thing until the structure underneath gives way. The difference is invisible from outside, so only you can police it.

Find where you are faking a result instead of building the base for it. Ask a coach or a teacher where the movement should actually come from. Then go slower, from there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you forced progress and injured something instead?
