A tutor who says “that’s easy” just taught the kid to stop asking.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Calling something easy puts the learner on the wrong side of the conversation. The kid who hears it learns that their question was stupid, so next time they are stuck they will keep it to themselves, which is the opposite of what you wanted. Difficulty is relative to what somebody has already seen. Nothing is easy from the side where you do not know it yet.

Drop the word altogether when you help someone. Say it took you a while too, then ask which part is confusing. Make asking the next question as cheap for them as you possibly can.
