From row twelve, pointe work looks like floating. From inside the shoe, it looks like years.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Distance hides the cost of anything done well. From the audience the movement looks effortless, which is the intended effect, and the years of blistered, repetitive work are deliberately invisible from row twelve. That gap is why comparing yourself to a finished performance is so discouraging. You are measuring your process against somebody else’s product.

When you catch yourself feeling hopeless watching someone excellent, find out how long they have been doing it. Compare your week against their early weeks, not against tonight. Then go and do the ordinary part of your own practice.
