The best shift lead in the café is still the one who grabs a rag when things get busy.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Authority that will not touch the work loses its grip quickly. Picking up a rag when the place is busy says that nothing on the list is beneath you, and that one act buys more cooperation than any amount of instruction. It also keeps you honest about how hard the jobs you hand out really are. Leading is partly a position and mostly an example.

If you are in charge of anything, do some of the ordinary work alongside the people doing it, especially when it is busy. Keep enough distance to still see the whole thing. Ask whether you would want the task you are about to assign.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When the pressure rises, do you direct or pick something up?
