Self-consciousness is the thing that quietly ruins participation. You decide that if you cannot do something well you should not do it at all, and so the singing gets left to people with good voices and the praying gets left to people with good words. Sincerity was never a skill competition. An off-key voice in a car is a person meaning it, which is the whole point.
