Forgiveness at home sometimes sounds like knocking on a door you slammed an hour ago.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Repair at home almost never gets a speech. It looks like going back down the hallway ten minutes after you slammed the door, which is humiliating in a small and specific way, because everybody heard the slam and now everybody can hear you knocking. That short walk is most of what forgiveness actually involves between people who live together. Grand reconciliations are rare, and awkward returns are the common form.

If you slammed something this week, go back before bed. You do not need a prepared sentence. Knocking and saying you came back is enough to start.
