It’s hard to keep hating someone you keep mentioning to God by name.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Hatred needs a caricature to work on, and a name gets in the way of one. Saying somebody out loud, as a person with a name, repeatedly, slowly undoes the flattened version of them you have been maintaining. You do not have to feel differently for this to work; the mechanism is in the repetition rather than in your sincerity. Contempt is surprisingly hard to sustain against a specific human being.

Use the name this week instead of the label. Out loud, daily, for as long as you can manage it.
