Years of ordinary trade work do not read like preparation while you are in them. Measuring, cutting, fixing what you got wrong, dealing with customers: none of that looks like training for anything larger. But the habits are the same habits, and the patience is the same patience. Nothing in a working life is wasted for not being the thing you expect to be known for.
Take whatever you do for money or a grade and do it properly, on its own terms. Learn the boring part, not only the interesting part. Years from now that is where you will find you learned how to work.
Which practical skill of yours might matter later more than expected?
