Contentment is a muscle God builds every time you don’t need the newest one.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every time you decide you do not need the upgrade, something gets stronger. The wanting is trained by feeding it, and so is the not-wanting. Contentment is not a personality trait you either have or lack; it is the accumulated result of a few hundred small refusals. Each one makes the next advert slightly less persuasive.

Keep the old one for another month, whatever you have been told you need. The phone, the boots, the bag. Notice at the end of the month whether anything in your life was actually worse.
