You might find God faster in a dish pit than in a debate.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some understanding arrives through your hands rather than your arguments. Plain repetitive work occupies just enough of you to stop the circling, and things you could not reason your way to tend to show up in the quiet. Debate sharpens a position. Scrubbing a pan for twenty minutes changes the person holding it, which is usually what was actually needed.

When you are stuck on a question that will not resolve, go do something physical and dull on purpose. Dishes, a walk, raking, the long way home. Leave your phone out of reach and let the question sit.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where have you learned more by working than by arguing?
