Rules look arbitrary from underneath and obvious from above. The moment you are responsible for somebody smaller than you, the curfew and the no-phones-at-dinner thing stop being about control and start being about a worry you can finally feel. Your parents are working from information you do not have yet: how fast things go wrong, and how little warning you get.
Take charge of a younger kid for an evening, by babysitting, coaching or helping with a cousin. Then pick one rule at home you resent and let it go uncontested this week.
Which rule of your parents’ makes no sense to you yet?
