The self-made story requires some careful editing. To believe you did it alone you have to leave out the person who drove you across town twice a week, the one who paid the fees, the one who washed the kit and the one who sat through the cold games. None of that shows up in the highlight reel, and all of it was the actual condition for the highlight.

Count the lifts you have been given this year, roughly. Then tell one of those people what you noticed, with the detail attached rather than a general thanks.
