Apologizing to God and to the person you hurt are two separate stops. Don’t skip the second one.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Settling it privately is easier than settling it with the person, which is exactly why the second stop gets skipped. One conversation costs you nothing socially. The other requires standing in front of somebody who watched you do it and saying so without a cushion. Feeling clean is not the same as having repaired anything, and only one of these makes a difference to the other party.

Make the second stop this week. Name the actual thing, leave out the explanation of why you did it, and do not ask them to say it was fine.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who is still owed the apology you only made privately?
