A wave from a neighbor’s porch costs nothing and still tells you that you belong somewhere.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Belonging gets built out of very small signals. A hand raised from a porch says you are known here, that your face is on somebody’s list of normal. None of it needs conversation or effort, which is exactly why it works; it is recognition with no bill attached. Lose it and you feel the gap before you can name it.
Try waving first for a week, at the neighbor, the crossing guard, the kid two grades below you. Some people will not wave back, and that is fine; you are not collecting responses. You are making the street a little easier to live on.
Where do people still wave at you by name?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
