You usually find out what your hometown gave you the first week you live somewhere it doesn’t exist.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

You cannot see water you have always been swimming in. Whatever your town handed you looks like how the world simply is until you stand somewhere that runs differently. A way of greeting people, a pace, the assumption that somebody will stop if your car dies. The first week away is the comparison you never had.

Do not wait for the move to take that inventory. Write down three things about where you live that you assume are normal everywhere. Ask somebody who moved in from elsewhere whether they are.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would be missing if you moved far away tomorrow?
