Your grandparents’ porch was where the whole family ended up after dinner. Some places hold a family without trying.

Certain places hold people together without anybody organising it. Nobody appointed the porch as the gathering spot; it simply had enough chairs, the right light and no reason to leave. Families tend to have one or two of these, and when they go the gathering quietly stops happening. The place was never the point and was somehow essential anyway.
Name the equivalent place in your own family and go and sit in it this week while other people are there. Stay past the point where you would normally drift off. Those afternoons are not scheduled, so they have to be chosen.
