You can’t be grateful for something you never look at. Attention comes first.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Gratitude sits downstream of attention rather than beside it. You cannot feel anything about something you have not actually looked at, and most of what is good in your life has turned into scenery, filed as background and skipped. That is why trying to feel more grateful by effort alone gets nowhere. The missing step is the looking.

Choose one ordinary thing a day this week and look at it properly for thirty seconds. The room you sleep in, the food in front of you, somebody’s face while they are talking. The feeling tends to take care of itself once the looking happens.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you stopped looking at long enough to appreciate?
