A noisy house means there are people in it. Some people would trade quiet for that in a second.

Noise is a side effect of company. A house with people moving through it is loud, and the loudness is the most reliable sign that you are not alone in your own life. Quiet is lovely in small amounts and is also exactly what an empty house sounds like. Which of the two you want depends entirely on which one you already have too much of.

Next time the noise irritates you, let the thought cross your mind that somebody elsewhere would trade their silence for it. You can still want your door shut. Just go and sit in the middle of it for twenty minutes first.
