Your first paycheck teaches you what a pair of sneakers really costs: hours, not dollars.

A paycheck converts prices into time. Once you know what an hour of your own labour pays, every price tag quietly translates itself, and a pair of shoes becomes a specific number of shifts on your feet. That exchange rate is the most useful thing a first job teaches, and it arrives without anybody explaining it. Afterwards you cannot really unlearn it.
Work out your own number this week and apply it to the next thing you want. Divide the price by your hourly pay. Some things are still worth the hours, and the point is that you are the one deciding.
