Most of your taste was handed to you by somebody, usually sideways, usually by accident. A friend played one song in a car and quietly rearranged years of your listening. The handover is so casual that neither of you ever counts it, and so the credit never gets paid. They have no idea how far that one afternoon travelled.

Text the person who gave you the band, the film, the game you still love, and tell them it stuck. Send the specific thing. It takes a minute and it is the kind of message people keep.
