“I’m not a cook” usually just means “I’ve never practiced cooking.”

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of what sounds like a personality is actually a report on how many hours you have put in. Saying you are not a cook describes somebody who has made perhaps four meals, which is not a type of person, it is a count. The trouble with the identity version is that it closes the question: types cannot practise their way out, but beginners can.

Pick one dish and make it three times in three weeks. The second will be better and the third will be fast. Then do it with a second dish and watch the sentence stop being true.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you called yourself when you just never practiced?
