Moving away makes you notice your accent, your slang, your food. Sometimes you only see your culture once you leave it.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Culture is invisible while it is the default. The food, the volume, the way people greet each other, the words you assumed everybody used: none of it looks like anything until you are somewhere it is not standard. Contrast is what makes the shape show up.

So write down the things you notice missing in the first month, because that list is honest and it fades. Then keep one of them deliberately: cook the dish, play the music, use the word anyway. Being able to see it is also being able to choose it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What about your own culture would you notice from far away?
