You inherit stories before you are old enough to decide whether they are true.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Children absorb the family account of things long before they can evaluate it. Who was difficult, what happened that year, which relative was the failure and which was the hero, all of it arrives as fact rather than as one version. By the time you can assess it, the stories are already load-bearing. Undoing them takes deliberate work.
Take one story you have always accepted and ask who first told it and what they had at stake. You may find it holds up. If it does not, you are allowed to revise it, quietly and without a confrontation.
Which story about your family did you believe without ever checking?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
