Your first rough performance review isn’t the end of your career. It’s often the first honest feedback you’ve ever gotten.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most feedback you get before your first job is softened or absent. Teachers are grading work and friends are protecting the friendship, so nobody has sat you down and said plainly where you fall short. A rough review is unpleasant mainly because it is unfamiliar, and it hands you a list you have never actually had before.

Read it twice, a day apart, and separate what is accurate from what merely stung. Pick one item you could visibly improve in a month and say so to your manager. One change they can see counts for more than agreeing with everything.
