It’s easier to change your mind about a take you never announced. Hold your hot takes loosely.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Saying a thing publicly attaches your standing to it. After that, changing your mind means admitting you were wrong in front of an audience, so people quietly defend positions they no longer believe because the defending is cheaper than the admitting. The louder the original claim, the more expensive the exit.

Try holding your next strong opinion for a day before broadcasting it. When you do say it, leave the door open: this is where I have got to so far. Small wording like that keeps you free to move later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Did you announce an opinion too loudly to back out of?
