What was survival for one generation can become limitation for the next.

Habits that once kept a family alive can quietly go on running after the danger has passed. Extreme thrift, secrecy, distrust of institutions, working past exhaustion, all of these were rational under real pressure and become constricting when conditions change. The next generation gets the behavior without the emergency that justified it. It looks like character until you learn the history.

Ask what your family’s protective habits were originally protecting against, and whether that threat is still in front of you. Where it is not, you have permission to relax the rule. Honoring what saved them does not require living as though the danger continued.
