Breaking an unhealthy tradition can be an act of loyalty to people not yet born.

STILLNESS
Ending a damaging pattern rarely feels like loyalty at the time. It feels like betrayal, and the family may say so. But the people who benefit are the children and grandchildren who never have to learn what you had to unlearn, and that is a form of devotion aimed forward rather than backward. Someone has to be the one who stops it.
If you are carrying that decision, expect it to be lonely for a while and hold it anyway. Find one person outside the family who understands what you are doing. The confirmation matters when nobody at home will offer it.
