One day your mom tells a story about being nineteen and lost, and you realize she was never handed a manual either.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Parents present a finished version of themselves, partly to be steady for you, and the result is that you assume they always knew what they were doing. Hearing about the year they were lost rearranges that. They were improvising at your age with less information than you have, and the certainty you have been measuring yourself against was assembled afterwards.

Ask one of them about a time they had no idea what they were doing. What they were afraid of at nineteen, what they chose almost at random. The answer tends to make your own uncertainty look a lot more ordinary.
