Every generation gets to decide which inheritance remains emotional property.

Not everything handed down has to be kept. Grudges, shame about a certain event, an old feud with another branch of the family, these are transmitted as though they were property with your name on the deed. Each generation gets to decide what stays in the estate. Declining an inherited resentment is not disrespect to the people who felt it; their reasons were theirs.

List what you are carrying emotionally that predates you. Ask of each item whether you would choose to take it on today. What you do not renew tends to stop being passed along.
