Nobody narrates the clumsy months once they are past, so the world looks full of people who were always competent, and that picture is held up by silence rather than by truth. When you feel behind this week, ask one person who is good at the thing what their first few attempts were like. The answers are reliably worse than you imagine. Then go and have your own bad attempt, since that is the route everyone took.
