Credit misplaced in your favour is uncomfortable because correcting it costs you something real and immediate. Fix it in the moment if you can, because it gets harder by the hour. Say whose it was, plainly, with no story about how the confusion happened. Doing that once in front of others will do more for how you are seen than borrowed credit ever could.
