A team that knows the goal can improvise. A team that only knows the steps freezes when one breaks.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Instructions only cover the situations somebody anticipated. The moment reality differs, people who have the sequence and nothing else have nothing to reason from, while people who understand the purpose can invent a new route to the same place. Telling somebody why is not a courtesy, it is what makes them useful when you are not there.

When you hand off a task, spend one extra sentence on the point of it. When you receive one, ask what it is for before you start. The question sounds naive and saves whole afternoons.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Does your group know the point or only the steps?
