Don’t make every decision a vote, and don’t make none of them one. Knowing which is which is the job.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Putting everything to a vote looks fair while quietly handing your responsibility to a group that did not ask for it, and deciding everything alone turns people into passengers. The actual job is sorting which is which, since things that affect how people spend their own time usually deserve a say, and things that need to be consistent usually do not. Getting that sorting wrong is what most complaints about a leader are really about.

Before the next decision, ask whether you would genuinely change course if the vote went the other way. If not, do not stage one. Decide, and then say how you decided.
