People forgive a slow decision more easily than a secret one.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Slowness is annoying and it does not damage trust, because people can see you working. A decision made privately and delivered finished tells everybody they were not part of something that concerned them, and that is what lingers long after they have forgotten the decision itself. Secrecy gets read as a judgment about who counts.

If you are deciding something that affects people, tell them it is being decided before it is. Say when they will hear and what you are weighing. Taking an extra two days costs far less than surprising them.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What decision are you making quietly that others should hear about?
