If your instructions only make sense to you, they aren’t instructions. They’re a riddle.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Clear instructions feel clear to whoever already knows the answer, which is why most unclear ones get issued with total confidence. The listener has none of the context in your head, so what reaches them is a set of hints they then have to interpret, and they will interpret differently from you. Any misunderstanding is information about the instruction rather than about them.

Ask somebody to repeat back what they are about to do, in their own words, before they start. Rewrite the part that came back wrong. Do it twice and you will start seeing your own patterns.
