Real influence makes people more like themselves, not more like you.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Influence that turns people into versions of you is a sort of flattery you end up paying for, since what you have left is a group that has mislaid its own judgement. The better sign is somebody becoming more clearly themselves around you, readier to say what they think and more confident in the thing they are genuinely good at. You can tell which you have by whether anyone disagrees with you.

Look at the people closest to you and ask whether they are getting more distinct or more similar. Encourage the one thing somebody does differently from you. If nobody argues with you any more, that is worth noticing.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are the people near you becoming more themselves or more yours?
